Priestess Janet Parfitt talks about the qualities of mothering, how we can all manifest mothering energy in the world and access the support and unconditional love of the Great Mother.
This is the season of Lammas; it is the time when we celebrate Cerridwen in her Great Mother aspect as She who gave birth to us all. The image of the Mother is one of nurturing and compassion. The Great Mother brings us all unconditional love. But sadly, not everyone has the experience of unconditional love from our own human mothers and those who are wounded by trauma from the motherline can find this time very triggering.
Some people’s mothers have struggled with being a mother through very difficult times and have not always managed to rise to every challenge. This is okay. We are all human and some days we move mountains and other days we struggle to get out of bed. Other mothers are sometimes just not very nice people and there is little we can do about that except leave them behind as soon as we can. Those who have bad mothers will always feel that grief for a mother who wasn’t what she should have been.
There are those, like me, who were unable to have children. I so wanted to be a mother, but my biology was against me, and I carry that wound of being a barren woman. There are those of us women who cannot or do not want to have children. But the values of mothering can be expressed in many different ways. Men can struggle with the idea of being a mother. How can they encapsulate that energy? But nurturing and loving can be done by us all. Whether we are bringing up children or looking after elderly relatives, the caring side of our personalities is still there. If we look after pets or even tend a garden, we are nurturing. Mothering is a state of being. It is that part of us that looks out for others. And in that sense, we are all mothers.
Cerridwen as the Great Mother Goddess brings us Her love to teach us that, whatever our personal experiences, She always loves us unconditionally and She shows us how we can be the same. Caring for others can be very challenging, with plenty of good days and bad days but the Great Mother understands what we are going through and holds us in Her Great Love. We entered this world through Her Yonic gateway and from that moment She holds us in Her heart. However difficult life is, the Great Mother never falters. Welcome Her into your heart and She will always be there to hold your hand, whatever challenges life throws at you. Her love is unwavering, strong, and fierce. She will never let you down. Trust in Her Great Love and all will be well.
With blessings.
